When I first found out that I was pregnant with my second baby, I started taking notes on how it was different from the first time around. Here are some of my observations:

I could feel the pregnancy before I even had a positive pregnancy test. The day before I got a positive pee test (4.5 weeks), I was already feeling round ligament pain.

With my first pregnancy, my first hint that I was knocked up was that my chest looked like a road map—completely covered in blue veins. That didn’t happen this time around, and my boobs didn’t even start to get bigger until the beginning of my second trimester. (And they still aren’t back to their former glory.)

I can already feel movement! I was about 19 weeks pregnant before I felt Nic move, and feeling him wiggle around in me was one of my favorite parts of pregnancy. I even missed it after he was born. So, I’m very excited that this baby made his or her presence known at around 15 weeks! I wasn’t sure if it was baby at first, but the other night I went to see The Vow and distinctively felt a summersault. Maybe it’s a girl because it likes sappy movies?

Everyone says you get bigger faster with the second pregnancy. I’ve found this only to be partly true. I found myself unbuttoning my pants much earlier with this one, but if you compare the 16 week bump picture my husband took this morning, with the one from my pregnancy with Nic, they are strikingly similar. (See picture above.)

Mostly though, having Tea is an opportunity for me to spend time catching up with someone special.

I spent this last weekend in Dallas, Texas visiting family. My Mom, Reese and I enjoyed Tea with our cousin. We had a great time catching up and my cousin shared a story about one of her good friends who has a little girl.

Everyday after school, her friend would prepare tea and a snack for her little girl. They’d spend 20-30 minutes of uninterrupted time (no phone, no tv, nothing), catching up on her daughter’s day. I can only imagine how much information was shared between Mother and Daughter during these Teas, which might otherwise never have been shared.

It’s not like I don’t spend enough time with Reese already but I do find myself multi-tasking when I’m with her more often than not. Having Tea will ensure some special one on one time.

I love this idea and I plan to implement daily Tea with Reese when she is a little older. Probably not with all the fancy fixings – just a cup of tea and a tea sandwich. If you have a little boy, there is no reason you can’t do tea or another favorite special drink and snack with them too. The point is to carve out this special time to spend with your child in a world where we’re always rushing around. Reese will feel like she's getting a treat and I will get to hear all about her day.

And schedules shouldn't be an excuse. If you’re not home the same time your child arrives home from school, maybe your special time together could be in the evening. And if doing something daily is too much, maybe it’s during weekends.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.mommybeta.com/blogs/2012/2/20/vacation-classroom.html"><rss:title>Vacation Classroom</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.mommybeta.com/blogs/2012/2/20/vacation-classroom.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Learning Travel dominican republic education vocabulary</dc:subject>

I'd never appreciated travel as a learning opportunity until last week. We spent a few days in the Dominican Republic and Baby Mo learned no fewer than 20 new words in just a week abroad - including several in Spanish!

My husband Clayton booked the trip just four days before we left. He found a great deal and pulled the trigger while I was asleep. I was nervous because I'd been really sick and my back has been getting far worse as Baby #2 gets heavier and heavier. Clayton was convinced that a week at a resort would help me heal and help Mo get over his cold. He was right but the trip was healthy for our family for more than just physical reasons.

Four days of being gadget and work-free really forced us to focus on our toddler in a way we don't always get to. We ate together, we played together, we napped together around the clock. We taught him things. Many, many things. He learned to count to three, recite ABC (only up to ABC though), and say words like hola, piña (pineapple), leche (milk), ocean, waves, hippo, frog, ribbit, and more. He tried new foods, listened to new music, and explored the tropical terrain with such enthusiastic curiosity. I was so proud of my little ocean sponge!

I feel a little bad that we can't continue to devote our attention to Baby Mo 24/7 every single day the way we did when we were on vacation. Who can? Work and housework don't do themselves. But I was reminded of a few lessons that I hope to carry with us now that we are back home.

I learned that my child learns quickly and proportionately to how much attention we give him;

I learned that smart devices have no place at family meals - something I already had tried to enforce but now am even more convicted about;

And I learned that every situation presents a learning opportunity for an eager little boy and if we really pay attention and take advantage of the chance to teach him things, magic can happen!

I was inspired by this recipe on Six in the Suburbs to create my own mini omelet muffin for Reese and she gobbled them up. Super convenient for those mornings when you want to give your child a nutritious breakfast but are short on time.

Ingredients:

7 eggs (plus some milk)

1 zucchini

2 cups spinach

½ cup cheese (what ever kind you like)

What to do:

Preheat oven to 375. Beat eggs in a bowl and add some milk… just like you’re making scrambled eggs. Dice 1 zucchini and sauté. Then sauté the spinach. You might be able to skip this step but I didn’t want to chance it and have it be undercooked. Then add the zucchini, spinach and cheese to the eggs and mix.

I thought it would be cute to use little cup cake wrappers but it was kind of a pain to get the egg out so next time I’ll just cook the egg mix directly in the muffin pan. I made 20 mini muffins. I kept 10 out to use within a few days and I froze the rest to use later. Enjoy!

It’s like walking into Pinterest. That’s the only way I can describe it. When I stumbled on the Acme Party Box Company store the other day, I thought I’d died and gone to handmade heaven. Seriously, it’s that good.

I was out shopping for items for Nic’s second birthday party, so it was extremely fortuitous that I noticed the word “party” in their small sign out front. I hadn’t heard of the store, so when I walked inside to find handmade buntings, party linens and unique favors, I was floored. They even had a birthday party going right in the store, during which a focused group of nine-year-old girls was happily felting their own stuffed animals! I’m secretly hoping my #2 is a girl, just so we can have crafty birthday parties (or maybe I can just have a crafty boy?)! Acme Party Box Company's Palo Alto Store

I purchased a roll of gingham cloth napkins, some giant red (biodegradable) balloons, and a wooden bear with some tiny mushrooms to use as a cake topper. I also left with a desire to know more about this store and the obviously crafty women behind it. So, I emailed Cathy Keyani, one of the store’s founders, with some questions.

Where'd you get the idea to start the store?

My business partner, Lisa Fulker, and I both love to entertain and are environmentally conscious. We found from years of trying to source eco-friendly party supplies for our own celebrations that the types of products we were looking for just didn't exist, so we usually ended up making our own. When we were both ready to venture out from our previous careers we thought the time was right for to fill the void in the party sector between good design and environmentally responsibility.

Who makes all the wonderful items?

The products we design are made by a combination of really great people! Some things we make ourselves, our very generous friend-ployees help with most everything, and a lovely group of seamstresses in San Francisco has been sewing our linens.

Where do you get the ideas?

We are inspired by so many things! Sometimes it's by a need we have ourselves in our own lives, sometimes by something unique that we see and can translate into something right for our customers. Most inspiration stems from seeing a challenge that needs a solution; for example our craft kits came from the activities we conduct at our in-store parties.

What are your top sellers?

Glass Drinking Jar with Gorgeous Cut-Out Top and a Stripey StrawAmong party supplies, our glass drinking jars and stripey straws are our best sellers. They're fun for grown up and kids and have so many uses after the party that we can hardly keep them in stock. Our flag bunting and fun cake toppers are always popular, too.

We have some wonderful gifts that have done really well this past holiday season: our Laguiole Multi Function Tool (a beautiful Swiss Army-style knife), and several mango wood products (salt cellars, platters).

I notice that you have several party themes on your site. Do you rotate themes?

We always have seasonal collections and tend to change up our fabric selections during the year. Right now we are looking at some really wonderful cottons from India. Because we are so focused on reusability we love that someone can select one of our fabric collections because they are attracted to it, and we can them help them accessorize it to suit any theme. Although we don't have any character driven themes, a parent came in recently who was able to pick a selection of fabrics that she loved and wants to use in her kitchen after the party, but that also would satisfy her young son's superhero theme.

What is your favorite kid's party theme?

I think all of us have a real soft spot for our woodland and vintage circus parties. There's something very warm and familiar about them that inspires a sense wonder and joy in kids. Woodland Party

Vintage Circus Party

What are your top tips for an eco-friendly party?

We are huge proponents of reusable tableware and linens. It doesn't take much more effort to throw linens in the wash than it does to throw them in the garbage, and some of the most fun that happens is after the party when hosts and friends share a few minutes around the kitchen sink. Times like this are really relationship building, and isn't that the real reason we have parties anyway?
