Granny Shower?
Last week I heard of something called a "Granny Shower." This is a mini-baby shower for first-time grandmothers where friends give them gifts to make their home grandchild-ready. At the risk of sounding like a baby-party animal, I think this is great! What an adorable idea!
My mother-in-law (MIL), bless her heart, has spent countless hours making sure that her home is a place her grandchildren are comfortable. She anticipates every growth stage and makes sure she has ALL the gear. She has high chairs, ride-on toys, bouncy seats, swings, strollers, car seats, and most recently potty training seats. And of course many many toys. And she paid for it all herself!
My mother does the same for when we visit and we live across the country! She foots the bill for all the gear, although in her case it will come in handy all the more so because my nephew lives with her.
If I had known of this concept before Mo came along, I might have suggested a Granny Shower for both my mom and my MIL, although probably not for the mother-to-be to throw this kind of thing. Still, it would be sweet for a few choice friends to chip in to get an expectant grandmother a few things to turn their homes into "Grandma's House."
As I've said before, I don't think baby showers should be about "the loot." They are about celebrating new beginnings in life. So why not celebrate a man or woman's transition into new grandparenthood? What could be sweeter than that and more worthy of celebration??
