Double Standard
Why is it that I am completely understanding of my mommy friends who are late to a play date, have to leave early from a lunch or all together have to reschedule - and I still hold my best non-mommy friends accountable for showing up exactly on time?!
One of my biggest pet peeves is tardiness. Not the occasional, "I'm running a five min late," or even 10-15 with a heads up but the "I'm about 20 min behind...I just got one working out" or what ever the case may be. I'm not even going to get started. I am lucky to say that even my always-late friends are really great about being on time when meeting me. I think it's because I've given them so much grief over the years.
Now back to why I am writing this post. Yesterday I was meeting two moms and their babies for lunch at 11 a.m. (which is now the new meeting time because the babes are just waking from their first nap and are happy!). Because Taz has woken early from her nap I was on time. I got a text from one mom that she was going to be 10 min late and a call from another saying that her baby was still sleeping. My rule is never wake a sleeping baby if you don’t have to so I assured her to just meet up with us when ever he woke. So our 11 a.m. lunch turned into an 11:30ish lunch and it was fabulous! Then I thought about it and wondered why I wasn’t in the last bothered. If this was a situation with some of my non-mommy friends I would have been pretty irritated.
The thing is, when you have a kid, you have to just go with the flow. I’ve become a better person living by this motto. I try hard not to plan too much and when I make plans I usually end the confirmation with something like, “….depending on how Taz is doing, I’ll let you know.” There is just so much you can’t control with a baby like poop explosions or lots of spit up and you both have to change, or extra long naps (which are a blessing)!
So I don’t feel bad about holding my non-mommy friends to being on time. Now, more than ever this is so important to me because I only have a short window of time to hang out before I need to be home to relieve my hubby, babysitter or when I just get too tired to enjoy myself.
