Her Name is ...

My husband and I took a long time to decide on a name for our daughter. Between going back and forth on our own and our families’ preferences, we finally decided upon an abbreviated version of family name. The name we settled upon isn’t as simple to grasp as a Jennifer or Natali, even though it is just one syllable.

Recently at a music class, the teacher has started pronouncing her a name that is a form of her name but is a much different vibe than the name we gave her. Think John and Johnnie or David and Dave. We introduced her as the name we would like her to be called so you would think that teacher would call her by that name. I’m guessing this is going to be a constant struggle. Any advice from parents on how to have your children called what you’d like them to be called, at least until they are old enough to have a say?

Why is naming a baby so hard?

Here I am, 29 weeks pregnant, and we still don’t have a name for our baby. I know it’s not uncommon, but I really want to have our minds made up! They were made up about four months ago, but then my husband came around to a name I always loved, Paisley, which made us consider switching names. Well, since that development, we have learned of some crazy coincidence with that Paisley has with the Parnell name that pretty much prohibits us from using that name. There’s even a book about it! Hence, we won’t be naming our little girl Paisley (though many of you may breathe a sigh of relief at that news anyway.)

So, back to square one. We’ve been tossing around names, but it seems like everytime we find one, either someone doesn’t like it or we find out it’s the #2 list of Nameberry’s most popular names in 2010.  Why is it SO hard to settle on a name?! If you’re a parent out there, how did you decide on a name?
